Cottesloe superboot flyhalf Dave Cloete landed a monster penalty goal from half way to clinch a fairytale comeback 30-27 win over Nedlands at Harvey Field today in their RugbyWA club competition top of the table clash, sponsored by KWIK Crane and Transport Hire.
Cloete’s strategic kicking and a much improved competition at the breakdown clawed Cottesloe back into the game in the second half but it seemed the game was destined to finish on a draw when reserve wing Nathan Hunt grabbed a sensational try with three minutes to play, but Cloete missed the modest conversion. But the wily flyhalf had one more kick up his sleeve and broke Neddies’ hearts with the final play of the day, a huge goal from the half way line.
Nedlands led 20-3 at the break with a slight territorial advantage, but far superior conversion of opportunities. Cottesloe ruled the scrums and had chances but never looked as good as Neddies with the ball in hand.
