Hurricane Jamie Cameron signs with Rockingham as Premier Grade Coach

FORMER HURRICANE TAKES COACHING ROLE

Rockingham Rugby Union Club recently secured the services of former Wellington Hurricane Jamie Cameron as Premier Grade Coach for the 2010 season and beyond.

Cameron a veteran of 145 first class games in New Zealand and the United Kingdom will relocate to Rockingham in the coming weeks with his family, having agreed terms with the club.

“I’m hoping to bring a good structure and culture to the club as we move forward and develop the playing group.” Said Cameron.

Cameron (39), a former 1st 5/8 has a wealth of playing experience under his belt with numerous national honours including NZ under 17’s, NZ School Boys through to NZ Barbarians and All Black Trials.

With a career that includes playing seven Super Rugby games for the Wellington Hurricanes in 1996, he has also played for Taranaki and North Harbour in New Zealand’s domestic NPC.

When at the age of 27 a move to the UK saw Cameron subject to speculation he could play for Scotland (qualified due to his Scottish Grand farther), however this did not eventuate.

Over the course of his 145 game first class games Jamie amassed more than 1000 points while playing as a 1st 5/8.

On the coaching front Jamie guided Tukapa to a championship in the Taranaki competition for the first time in 33 years, all but repeating that success as the side finished runners up the following season.

Cameron has also worked as a technical advisor to Taranaki’s NPC team and coach’s.

“Rockingham Rugby Union Club is delighted to have secured a coach with the level of experience that Jamie has.” President Ross Cardy said “Jamie will bring a fresh approach along with his ample experience and a wealth of knowledge as the club looks to foster a new direction both on and off the field in 2010.”

While visiting Rockingham recently to meet with club officials and members Jamie also spent time doing recognisance for the move (under strict instruction from his wife). He also took the opportunity to meet with his new employer and club sponsor Smith’s Recruitment.

All interested players are welcome to join in the preseason training sessions held at Lark Hill sporting complex Tuesdays and Thursday at 6:30pm.

Grading games for U11 to U14 age groups only will take place on Saturday 17 April and Saturday 24 April 2010, with times TBC closer to those dates

The 2010 Junior Registration Day will take place on Saturday 20 February at all clubs. Keep your eyes peeled for the local club posters in your area!

The Joondalup Brothers have big plans

The 2009 Rugby season has come to a close and Joondalup Brothers RUFC can once again be proud of its achievements for the year.

2010 promises to be a year of growth and transformation for the club as we continue our journey towards becoming the next WA Premier Grade Club in 2011.

With a new clubhouse, new training facilities and a juniour membership in excess of 400 players, the future is looking very bright for our club.

New Players are always welcome and details of the 2010 registration day will be posted on the website once they become available.

We have teams starting from the Under 6's right through to the Seniors so theres always something for everyone.

As a club we pride ourselves on a passionate love for the game and the sporting values enjoyed by rugby worldwide.

It is the game they play in heaven after all!!!!!!

Training nights are  Tuesday and Thursday with matches being played on Saturday.

Perth-Bayswater Rugby Union Football Club

Pre-season training for the 2010 season will start on 19 January at 6.30pm.

Training will be every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter at 6.30pm sharp. Conditions will still be warm during training so all players will need appropriate running gear and own water bottle.

All players welcome.

The time has come gentlemen - Pre-Season Training re-commences in earnest on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Tuesday 12 January.

Training kicks off at 6.30pm sharp so be there by 6.15pm at the latest.

Put the word around and lets have maximum numbers down at Tompkins Park to do the work necessary to be successful on the paddock in 2010.

If you are not a fat forward or a lazy back you are also welcome! New players also very welcome.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF PERTH RUGBY

The club has announced that it will celebrate One Hundred Years of Perth Rugby in 2010. The announcement follows research into the club's history showing that while the current club began in 1928 as part of the rebirth of rugby in Western Australia, a Perth Rugby Club with connections to the current club was operating before the first World War.

"Another rugby competition was organised in 1893 with clubs such as The English Association and Rugby Union Club (Swans), Pirates, Fremantle, Zingari, Midland, Sydneys, Pioneers, Central Districts and Perth Rugby Club. The competiton lapsed in 1913. Perth won premierships in 1907 and 1910."

Force's teenage tyro has eyes on the game

A Super 14 debut playing alongside former schoolmate and Wallabies young gun James O'Connor is at the top of the Christmas wish list for Western Force rookie Stefano Hunt.

The highly-rated 18-year-old, who is a cousin of AFL convert and Brisbane Broncos rugby league star Karmichael Hunt, has spent the past month involved in pre-season training with the Force after signing a rookie deal for the 2010 season.

The youngster played with O'Connor as a junior in the first XV back line at Brisbane's Nudgee College.

He said it was a dream to make his debut playing alongside his old teammate next season, but acknowledged that a start in 2011 was more likely.

Big gun moves to Plamyra

2007 Championship winning coach John Taylor has moved from Perth Bayswater where he was the Head coach since 2006. He takes up the First grade Coaching position at Palmyra for the 2010 season. 2009 coach Dave Ball is taking a step back and continuing as assistant coach/director of coaching. It was his decision as he wanted a bit of the pressure of coaching relieved.

ME Bank Stadium takes shape for the 2010 Investec Bank Super 14 season

The move to our new ‘home ground’ at ME Bank Stadium for the 2010 Investec Bank Super 14 season is exciting news for all our members . . . and one of the big questions on everybody’s lips is “what are the improvements being made to ME Bank Stadium to cater for professional rugby?”
The improvements planned include:
Major improvements to the lighting at the venue to bring it up to broadcaster quality – including the installation of 2 new lighting towers.
New stands (temporary structures) being installed parallel to the eastern side line, in the south-eastern corner, and adjacent to the existing southern stand.
New terracing for standing room members on the hill at the north eastern corner
The installation of 2 new ‘big screens’ – one alongside the “shed” at the north western corner of the stadium, and another at the western end of the southern stands
New corporate suites being installed at both north western corner and alongside the grandstand on the south western side.
Major upgrade works to the existing change-room facilities to ensure both our Emirates Western Force players and our visiting team guests are catered for up to a Super Rugby standard.

THE LAST 5 YEARS OF PERTH RUGBY

Rugby in Perth is still 99% amateur when compared to Rugby Union Clubs in the east of the country and most of the rest of the world. However with the announcement 10 December  2004 by the then RugbyWA Chairman Geoff Stooke that Perth had won the bid over Rugby Union Victoria and Melbourne it all started to change.

Suddenly Western Australia was on the rugby map. It took another 2 years before the first Western Force team ran onto a rugby field to play in the then newly formed Super 14.
And then, on Friday 10 February 2006, the moment so many people have been wating for: The Tooheys New Super 14 début of the Emirates Western Force. More than 37,000 people packed Subiaco Oval to watch their team take on Australia's benchmark in the Super 12, the Canberra-based Brumbies. The final score was 25-10 in favour of the Brumbies but a new rugby force was born. What did this do for club rugby ?? well it will be interesting to hear the views of local people that have been in Perth longer  than what I have.

Tom Fearn Returns to Head Nedlands Centre of Coaching Excellence

Nedlands has achieved a significant coaching coup with the appointment of former Emirates Western Force assistant coach Tom Fearn as its inaugural Director of Coaching for 2010.

Tom’s appointment is part of a “coaching centre of excellence” being created by new Neddies President Hans Sauer, who took over from Murray McLean at the club’s AGM on November 26.

Tom is joined down at The Foreshore by two other Premier Grade coaches from last season, Willie van Dyk (Rockingham) and Steve McCullough (Associates). Willie will be coaching the Colts in 2010, while Steve will be assisting Tony Ball with the Premier Grade team. From all Neddies players and supporters, a big welcome to The Foreshore to both Willie and Steve.

In addition, the club welcomes back another of its favourite sons in the highly-credentialed Dave McKnight, whose list of successes during a long and distinguished association with Neddies has included Premiership victories in 1st Grade through to Colts. Dave will be the club’s Assistant Director of Coaching. Great to have you back Dave.

New President Hans said that building a “coaching centre of excellence” was part of a strategy by Nedlands to develop emerging talent in the Perth rugby competition to provide a feeder system for the Emirates Western Force.

As a player with Nedlands, Tom Fearn won a record six 1st Grade Premierships before taking up coaching in 1997. He guided Nedlands to Premiership victory in 1999 and 2000. After coaching the WA State team in 2001, Fearn went on to coach Wests Subiaco to three consecutive Premiership victories in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

That track record earned Fearn selection as one of John Mitchell’s assistant at the Emirates Western Force in the team’s inaugural 2006 Super 14 season, a position he held for four years.

The Nedlands coaching panel for 2010 also includes two other accredited ARU coaching examiners in Bryn Vaughan and Brendan Loag. There’s plenty more quality through the coaching ranks through the likes of Pete Sinden, Marty Fitzsimmons, Trent Gainey and Boycie McClutchie.

The 2010 will also be a milestone for Nedlands as the club pursues a much-anticipated $500,000 redevelopment of its club house at The Foreshore in Nedlands.

Of course, last year Neddies fielded a record nine senior teams and took home the WA Club Championship. The Neddies 1st Grade team also continued a remarkable record that has seen them make the finals for no fewer than 27 consecutive seasons – an achievement which would be the envy of any rugby club in the world.

With our coaching centre of excellence, we aim to improve our standards even further in 2010 to keep Neddies at the top of WA rugby. So bring it on….!!

He has a very successful coaching record at State level, with the Perth Gold team winning the Australian Rugby Shield championships in 2003 & 2005, and finishing runner-up in 2001, 2002 & 2004.
Bear and Razza need little introduction to Soaks. They are both highly successful players at Club and State level, and have coached the Associates U18s for the past 2 seasons. They bring a high level of enthusiasm, competitive drive and passion to the 1st Grade team, enhanced by a focus on fitness and physicality.

COTTESLOE CHOKE PALY OUT OF PREMIERSHIP

Cottesloe overpowered minor premiers Palmyra by an unexpected 27-6 at Members Equity Stadium today to win the 2009 grand final of the WA rugby club competition, sponsored by KWIK Crane and Transport Hire

Cottesloe’s predictable game plan of shutting Palmyra out of the game through forward control was well on course by half time despite the narrow 3-0 margin, as they dominated territory and possession to deny the Melville club all but the most limited opportunities.

Palmyra’s errors didn’t help their cause and when Cottesloe added a try mid-way through the second half, the writing was on the wall for the increasingly panicked minor premiers. A couple of late tries blew out the score to flatter the Seagulls but the win was just reward for their composed, dominant play that choked Palmyra out of the title they most coveted.
